Meet one of the largest members of the parakeet family

Alexandrine parakeets are named after Alexander the Great, who was rumored to keep these species as pets. These parakeets are known for their intellect, including their ability to imitate human speech. A social species, Alexandrine parakeets are flock animals, but the size of their flocks depends on the availability of food in the area.

  • Habitat: Forests, shrublands, and deserts in southern and southeastern Asia
  • Diet: Herbivore – seeds, grains, and fruit
  • Size: 56 to 62 centimetres long
  • Weight: 200 to 300 grams

Fun Facts about Alexandrine Parakeets

These birds have a variety of calls.

Alexandrine parakeets are diurnal.

Adults are sexually dimorphic, with males being identified by the black ring around their necks.

They nest in tree hollows.

Chicks are dependent on their parents until three or four months of age.

In the wild, they may be found living with ring-rosed parakeets.
