Rough-Scaled Plated Lizard

Rough-Scaled Plated Lizards

Look closely between the rocks – a master of hiding is here. We are home to two males, ‘Fynbos’ and ‘Khata’.

At home in nooks and crannies

Rough-scaled plated lizards are known for the rough scales on their heads, and the keels – ridged scales, on their backs. Across the length of their bodies, these lizards have deep grooves which are not covered by scales. These grooves allow the lizard to expand – a useful adaptation for females carrying eggs and for lizards who need to wedge themselves into a crevice to escape a predator.
